SHIP "WILLIAM TAPSCOTT". AFTER A VOYAGE OF 31 DAYS THEY LANDED IN NEW
YORK, THEN THEY TOOK A STEAMER TO ALBANY AND THEN THE TRAIN TO ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
FROM THERE THEY SAILED TO FLORENCE, NEBRASKA, WHERE THEY WERE TO GET THEIR HANDCARTS.
THEY JOINED THE 8TH HANDCART COMPANY. THEY RECEIVED A HANDCART, UTENSILS, WATER
CAN, BEDDING (BLANKET AND RUG), A LARGE TENT WAS PROVIDED FOR EACH 10 PERSONS.
EACH HANDCART HAD TO CARRY PROVISIONS FOR A WEEK BESIDES BEDDING AND CLOTHING
AND 200 POUNDS OF FLOUR. ON 09 JUNE 1859, THE COMPANY STARTED OUT TRAVELLING
4 MILES THE FIRST DAY AND THEN MAKING CAMP TO GET ORGANIZED. GEORGE ROWLEY WAS
CAPTAIN, THERE WERE 235 PERSONS, 60 HANDCARTS AND 6 OX - DRAWN WAGONS TO HAUL
PROVISIONS AND THE SICK.
ON 13 JUNE 1859, THE COMPANY REACHED FREMONT, NEBRASKA AND TEN DAYS PROVISIONS
WERE DISTRIBUTED: 10 POUNDS OF FLOUR AND A POUND OF BACON AND A LITTLE SUGAR
AND SALT FOR EACH PERSON.
03 JULY 1859, THE COMPANY ENCOUNTERED A LARGE BAND OF SIOUX WARRIORS, THE FIRST
INDIANS THAT MOST HAD EVER SEEN. THIS WAS THE YEAR OF "PIKES PEAK GOLD RUSH",
SO MANY PEOPLE WERE ON THE TRAIL. ONE GROUP WELL PROVIDED WITH HORSES AND RIFLES,
THAT HAD PASSED THE CARAVAN OF CARTS, KILLED A BIG BUFFALO. THEY TOOK ONE QUARTER
OF IT AND LEFT THE REST COVERED WITH THE HIDE AND PUT UP A NOTICE, "THIS
IS FOR THE HANDCARTS", THE FIRST FRESH MEAT FOR SOME TIME.
THE COMPANY PASSED CHIMNEY ROCK ON 22 JULY AND REACHED FORT LARAMIE ON 27
JULY. AN INVENTORY OF SUPPLIES REVEALED A GRAVE SHORTAGE, THE FOOD HAD BEEN EATEN
UP MUCH FASTER THAN THE SCHEDULE ANTICIPATED AND RATIONING BEGAN. ABOUT THIS
THEY MET A GROUP OF ROUGH MOUNTAINEERS WHO FED THEM MILK AND BREAD THAT WAS COOKED
IN PANS OVER A FIRE. IT TASTED VERY GOOD TO THE HUNGRY GROUP AND THEIR WAS PLENTY
TO GO AROUND.
WHEN THE HANDCART CO. REACHED GREEN RIVER, WYOMING THEY WERE DISAPPOINTED
AT FINDING NO SUPPLIES FROM SALT LAKE CITY, AS THEY HAD EXPECTED. CROSSING THE
STREAM WAS DIFFICULT AS THE WATER WAS ABOUT 3 FEET DEEP AND THE CURRENT SWIFT,
BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO CROSS SAFELY AND THE DAY BEING WARM THEIR CLOTHES DRIED
QUICKLY, BUT HUNGER GNAWED. AN OX DIED FROM DRINKING ALKALI WATER AND EVERY BIT
OF THE CARCASS WAS USED. SOME MADE SOUP OF WILLOW LEAVES AND KNUCKLE BONES.
24 HANDCARTS WENT ON FROM THERE AS FAST AS THEY COULD TO MEET THE TEAMS FROM
SALT LAKE WITH PROVISIONS. AT HAM'S FORK ON 25 OF AUGUST, THE PROVISION WAGONS
FROM THE VALLEY RESCUED THE HANDCART CO. AFTER TRAVELLING NIGHT AND DAY TO BRING
FOOD AND ASSISTANCE.
30 AUGUST: THEY CAMPED ON THE YELLOW CREEK, NEAR WHERE EVANSTON, WYOMING IS
NOW.
ON SUNDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER, THE HANDCARTS ROLLED DOWN EMIGRATION CANYON. THEY WERE
MET BY PEOPLE FROM SALT LAKE AND ESCORTED ON INTO THE CITY TO THE SQUARE, THE
LUGGAGE WAS DROPPED OUT AND THE HANDCARTS TAKEN AWAY. THAT NIGHT THEY SLEPT ON
THE GROUND , THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE TAKEN IN BY PEOPLE UNTIL HOMES COULD BE PROVIDED
