I WAS BORN AT BRIGHAM CITY, 14 SEPT. 1869. UNTIL 7 YEARS OF AGE, I LIVED IN SMITHFIELD, CACHE CO., UTAH. AT THIS TIME MY FATHER TOOK SICK, AFTER SEVERAL DAYS BISHOP HAMMER DECIDED TO TAKE HIM TO A DOCTOR, HE GOT OVER THE MOUNTAINS OF THREE MILE CREEK. AND WHEN ON THE WAY TO OGDEN HE DIED IN BISHOP HAMMER'S ARMS OF APPENDICITIS. THE FUNERAL AS HELD IN BRIGHAM CITY. WE RETURNED TO SMITHFIELD WHERE MY MOTHER TAUGHT SCHOOL FOR A LIVING. I ATTENDED SCHOOL FOR TWO MONTHS. MOTHER MARRIED JOE HUNT. WE THEN MOVED TO OXFORD THENCE BACK TO SMITHFIELD. AT TEN YEARS OF AGE, WE WENT TO RICHFIELD, SOUTHERN UTAH. JOE HUNT GOT DRUNK SEVERAL TIMES AND CAME NEAR TO KILLING MY MOTHER. WE MOVED FROM THERE AND CAMPED ON THE JORDON RIVER. MY MOTHER WAS VERY DOWN HEARTED AND SHE TOOK US FOUR CHILDREN DOWN TO THE BANKS OF THE RIVER TO DROWN US, TO GET AWAY FROM HIM. ME BEING AFRAID OF WATER REFUSED TO GO IN AND FINALLY TALKED HER OUT OF IT. FROM THERE WE STARTED SOUTH TO ARIZONA WITH FOUR HORSES AND A COVERED WAGON. WE GOT DOWN TO THE LARGE COLORADO AND FERRIED THAT WITH A FERRY BOAT AND WENT UP LEE'S BACK BONE. ONE OF THE HORSES BALKED, HUNT GOT OUT AND HIT THE HORSE BETWEEN THE EYES WITH A CLUB. THE HORSE DROPPED DEAD AND WE ROLLED HIM INTO A DUGOUT. WE THEN PULLED ON TOP OF A HILL AND CAMPED FOR THE NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING THE HORSE HAD JOINED UP WITH THE REST. WE NEXT WENT TO LITTLE COLORADO AND HAD TO FORD THAT. WE PUT BLOCKS UNDER THE WAGON BAX AND TIED IT DOWN TO KEEP IT FROM FLOATING AWAY. WE WENT TO RICHFIELD AND THEN TO CEDAR CITY, SOUTHERN UTAH AND THEN TO MOUNTAIN MEADOWS AND CAMPED WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEADOW MASSACRE TOOK PLACE. HERE WE MET TWO WOMEN WHO ESCAPED THE MASSACRE. FROM THERE WE WENT TO THE BIG COLORADO THEN TO NEW MEXICO-- LIVED HERE FOR ONE YEAR ON CORN BREAD AND WATER GRAVY. FROM THERE TO BRUSH VALLEY AND THEN TO SNOWFLAKE, ARIZONA-- FROM THERE TO HUBBY RIVER WHERE WE LIVED FOR SOME TIME. MY STEPFATHER USED TO GET DRUNK AND GIVE ME LOTS OF BEATINGS, HE FORCED US TO STEAL EVERYTHING POSSIBLE-- I GOT TIRED OF THIS AND WHILE WE WERE AT THE RAILWAY FOR FREIGHT, I STOLE HIS GUN AND STARTED ACROSS THE DESERT FOR SMITHFIELD, WHERE MY MOTHER WAS. I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. I HAD ONE DAY HEAD START BEFORE HE KNEW WHERE I WAS. HE CAME AFTER ME ON A HORSE. I HAD GOT 40 MILES WHEN HE REACHED ME. I HAD HAD NO FOOD FOR 1 AND A 1\2 DAYS. I DREW THE GUN ON HIM AND TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD KILL KIM IF HE AME ANY CLOSER. I COULD SEE A CAMPFIRE 1\4 MILE AHEAD. IT WAS A BUNCH OF MORMOM FREIGHTERS, AMONG THEM JIM MORTON (OR NORTON). THEY TOLD HUNT THAT THEY WOULD HANG HIM IF HE DIDN'T LEAVE ME ALONE. I THEN WENT TO WORK FOR JOHN D. LIES (SPELLING?) SON IN LAW FOR $15.00 PER MONTH. ONE SAT. THEY ALL WENT TO TOWN LEAVING ME TO CARE FOR THE CATTLE, ETC. THE BEARS, COUGARS AND LIONS WERE VERY BAD ON THIS MOUNTAIN. ONE ANIMAL THEY THOUGHT WAS A LION BY ITS TRACKS KILLED SEVERAL CALVES AND HOGS. THEY SET SEVERAL TRAPS BUT THEY COULDN'T GET HIM. THERE WAS A $20 REWARD FOR HIM. THIS SAT IT KILLED ANOTHER ALF. SO I SMOKED TWO TRAPS- CLEANED ALL THE LEAVES AWAY FROM THE CALF AND FASTENED THEM TO A TREE. SUNDAY MORNING THE LION WAS CAUGHT, HE SPRUNG AT ME AND I SHOT HIM THROUGH THE NECK. I SHOT HIM AGAIN BEHIND THE EAR, I GOT THE $20 REWARD. ABOUT A MONTH LATER A BEAR KILLED ANOTHER CALF. WE HUNTED THAT BEAR DOWN AND KILLED IT.

DAD (GEORGE ALBERT BROWN) MANAGED A TOWN HERD IN CARDSTON FOR YEARS. EVERY SUMMER ABOUT 1ST OF APRIL, HE WOULD GATHER ALL THE COWS IN TOWN AND HERD THEM EVERY DAY. BETWEEN THE TOWN OF CARDSTON AND THE ST. MARY'S RIVER. HE ALSO HAD THE TOWN STRAY POUND. IT WAS A REAL ATTRACTION WHEN HE WOULD HAVE AN ANIMAL LONG ENOUGH THAT HE HAD TO HAVE AN AUCTION SALE. MARGARET AND DOT AND I USED TO WALK OUT ON THE RESERVE TO MEET HIM AND WE WOULD TAKE A QUART OF COOL MILK FROM THE CELLAR. HE NEEDED MILK IN THOSE DAYS BECAUSE HE HAD STOMACH TROUBLE. DAD ALWAYS HAD LOTS OF INDIAN FRIENDS, THEY WERE ALWAYS COMING TO OUR HOUSE TO GET A LOAF OF BREAD OR SOME MILK, AND I DON'T THINK HE EVER TURNED ONE AWAY WITHOUT GIVING THEM SOMETHING, AND HE WAS ALWAYS BRINGING TRAMPS IN FOR MY MOTHER TO FEED.
DAD DIDN'T HAVE MUCH EDUCATION, AS A RESULT HE SURE DID WANT HIS FAMILY TO GET ALL THE SCHOOLING THEY COULD. MY MOTHER USED TO READ EVERYTHING OUT LOUD TO HIM, ESPIECIALLY THOSE DETECTIVE MAGAIZNES AS A RESULT I LEARNED TO HATE THE THINGS, BECAUSE WE HAD TO LISTEN TO THEM SO MUCH I GUESS.
DAD SURE WASN'T WELL IN HIS LATER LIFE, HE HAD BEEN IN HOSPITAL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND THE DAY I WAS MARRIED HE PUT HIS CLOTHES ON AND WALKED HOME, WE ONLY LIVED 1 1\2 BLOCKS ROM THE HOSPITAL AND WE SURE WERE HAPPY TO SEE HIM HOME. BUT HE WAS NOT WELL ( HE HAD EPILEPTIC FITS) AND MOTHER WASN'T WELL SHE WAS DIABETIC FOR YEARS AND SHE JUST COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF HIM. SO THE DR'S. SENT HIM TO PONOKA (MENTAL HOSPITAL) HE WAS THERE FOR 10 MONTHS. HE CAME HOME AND LIVED WITH MOM, DOT AND MARGARET HERE IN RAYMOND FOR TWO MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED.
