SEIZED WITH THE TYPHOID FEVER AND DIED. HE CAME TO AMERICA IN 1868, VIA JAPAN

1865 TO ABOUT 1919. He served in the military CIVIL WAR (1861 TO 1865).
ON THE OUTBREAK OF THE CIVIL WAR HE ENLISTED IN BATTERY B OF THE FIRST PENNSYLVANIA
LIGHT ARTILLERY 43rd REGIMENT, 14th RESERVE UNION ARMY IN JULY 1861 (HE WAS 22
YEARS OLD). THIS BATTERY BECAME KNOWN AS COOPER'S BATTERY, AFTER CAPTAIN JAMES
H. COOPER, WHO COMMANDED IT MORE THAN 3 YEARS.
HE ENLISTED SHORTLY AFTER THE SURRENDER OF FORT SUMTER. HE ENTERED AS A PRIVATE
IN THE ABOVE DETACHMENT.
WHEN HIS ENLISTMENT EXPIRED IN 1864, HE RE-ENLISTED FOR THE DURATION OF THE
WAR, REACHING THE RANK OF SERGEANT.
HIS BATTERY WAS INVOLVED IN TWENTY-FIVE (25) ENGAGEMENTS OF THE ARMY OF THE
POTOMAC OVER THE 4 YEAR PERIOD AND JAMES WAS THERE EXCEPT WHEN HE WAS ON FURLOUGH.
HE HAD 3 FURLOUGHS HOME, ONE IN THE SUMMER OF 1862, THEREBY MISSING THE SEVEN
DAYS BATTLE (IN THE WILDERNSEE CAMPAIGN, BEFORE RICHMOND, VIRGINIA) ON THE
PENINSULA, A SECOND AFTER THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, AND A THIRD IN FEBRUARY OF
1864, WHEN HE RE-ENLISTED.
HIS FATHER VISITED HIM IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA SHORTLY AFTER HE ENTERED THE ARMY,
AND HIS SISTER JENNIE VISITED HIM AT SHARPSBURG IN SEPTEMBER OF 1862 AFTER THE
BATTLE OF ANTIETAM.
IT IS ALSO SAID THAT HE WAS THOUGHT TO BE DEAD AT THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG
AND THAT HIS FATHER WENT THERE TO FIND HIM.
HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS SERGEANT IN AUGUST 1865, AT THE TERMINATION
OF THE WAR.
HE WAS ENGAGED IN ALL THE BATTLES OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC. IN THE BATTLE
OF GETTYSBURG, HE WAS STATIONED ON THE EAST OF CEMETERY HILL NEAR LITTLE ROUND
TOP, UNDER GENERAL REYNOLDS.
THROUGHOUT THE CIVIL WAR YEARS, JAMES KEPT IN CONTACT WITH HIS FAMILY BY WRITING,
SOMETIMES TO HIS FATHER, BUT MAINLY TO HIS BELOVED SISTER JANE, WHOM HE CALLED
JENNIE. THE LETTERS HE WROTE SURVIVE TO THIS DAY AND ARE IN POSSESSION OF FAMILY
MEMBERS. THE FAMILY ALSO HAVE HIS CARLISLE RIFLE AND HIS SWORD. JENNIE TOLD
JAMES SHE WOULD NOT MARRY AS LONG AS HE WAS IN THE ARMY, AND SHE WAS TRUE TO
HER WORD.
JAMES ENJOYED REUNIONS WITH CIVIL WAR COMRADES WHO WERE FREQUENT VISITORS
AND CAMPED AT THE MACLAY HOMESTEAD.
