NAUVOO. THEY SETTLED IN NAUVOO AND PROBABLY HAD SOME GOOD YEARS BEFORE LEAVING
NAUVOO FOR THE WEST. THEY CROSSED THE PLAINS TO UTAH IN THE 1ST DIVISION OF BRIGHAM
YOUNG'S COMPANY, ARRIVING IN THE VALLEY ON THE 20TH OF SEPTEMBER 1848.
DANIEL WAS A BUSINESSMAN, WHO APPARENTLY WAS BELOW HER STATION IN LIFE, SO
HER FATHER DISOWNED HER. SARAH'S FATHER, LORD JAMES WOODING, ON LEARNING OF HER
CONVERSION TO MORMONISM, DISINHERITED HIS DAUGHTER AS WELL. SARAH'S MOTHER, MARY
DAINTON WOODING, DID NOT DISOWN SARAH, UNBEKNOWNISH TO HER HUSBAND, SHE VISITED

THIS PEOPLE (MORMONS) OFF THE EARTH AND THE PEOPLE WERE TOLD BY CHURCH LEADERS
TO MOVE SOUTH TO UTAH COUNTY. SHE WAS TOO ILL TO TRAVEL SO WAS LEFT BEHIND WITH
ONE OR TWO OTHER WOMEN WHO WERE ALSO TOO ILL. ONLY ONE MAN, THE SHERIFF, WAS
LEFT TO GUARD THE TOWN. AFTER A WEEK OR SO, HER HUSBAND, SAMUEL RETURNED , BEING
SO WORRIED ABOUT HER, AND MOVED HER SOUTH ON HER BED.
SHE WITNESSED THE TIME WHEN IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO RAISE ENOUGH BREAD
STUFF TO SUBSIST ON, DURING THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET FAMINE OF 7 YEARS. THEY
WOULD GO T THE HILL SIDES AND FARM LANDS AND HUNT ROOTS OF VARIOUS PLANTS WHICH
THEY USED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF CEREALS AND GRAINS. WILD MINT FROM WILLOW PATCHES
FOR TEA AND DRIED CARROTS GROUND FOR COFFEE OR A BURNT CRUST OF BREAD IF ANY
WERE TO BE HAD. ALL THESE THINGS WENT TO MAKE PEOPLE VERY INDEPENDENT AND LEARN
TO KEEP THEMSELVES WITHOUT MONEY.
SHE WAS THE FIRST MILLINER BRIGHAM CITY HAD FOR MANY YEARS. SHE AND HER CHILDREN
WOULD ALSO FOLLOW THE THRESHING MACHINES AND GET THE CONSENT OF THE FARMERS TO
LET THEM TAKE THE BUNDLES OF GRAIN AND CUT THE HEADS OFF INTO A SHEET AND THEN
WOULD CARRY THE STRAW HOME WHERE SHE WOULD MAKE IT INTO BRAID FOR HATS. SHE MADE
ALL SORTS OF HATS FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND PEOPLE WOULD COME FROM ALL
OVER THE COUNTRY TO BUY HER HATS. Children were: ABRAHAM
