He was married to JANE BAYLOR.
He was married to CYNTHIA BUTLER
on 10 Apr 1828. He was sealed to spouse on 12 Jun 1872. DAVID AND CYNTHIA
JOINED THE CHURCH IN 1835, WHILE LIVING IN GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA. FIRST THERE
WAS AMUSEMENT AND AMAZEMENT FROM THEIR RELATIVES, THEN RIDICULE FROM THEIR NEIGHBORS.
DAVID AND CYNTHIA THEN SOLD THEIR LAND AND MOVED TO MISSOURI TO JOINT THE SAINTS.
FIRST TO CLAY COUNTY, THEN TO DAVIS COUNTY AND THE PERSECUTION BEGAN TO INCREASE.
DAVID FELT THE FULL FORCE OF MOB VIOLENCE WHEN HE WAS CAPTURED BY THE MOB ARMY
JUST BEFORE THEY STORMED ACROSS GOOSE CREEK TO BURN FAR WEST. HE MANAGED TO GET
TO HIS FARM, BUT ONLY TO FIND HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN HAD BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE.
ALL THE SAINTS WERE FORCED 12 MILES TO DIAHMAN. CYNTHIA AND THE CHILDREN WERE
CAMPING IN THE SNOW. THEY WERE ORDERED TO LEAVE THE COUNTY WITHIN 10 DAYS. THEY
MOVED ON TO CALDWELL COUNTY, HERE DAVID BUILT A LOG CABIN. AND SINCE NO MORMON
COULD RETURN TO DAVIS CO., DAVID CREPT BACK NIGHT AFTER NIGHT TO HIS FARM TO
GLEAN A LITTLE OF HIS OWN CROPS. EVERYTHING IN HIS HOUSE HAD BEEN STOLEN.
FINALLY, THE SAINTS WERE DRIVEN OUT OF MISSOURI ENTIRELY. THEY DRAINED A SWAMP
NO ONE ELSE WANTED AND BUILT THE CITY OF NAUVOO. HERE DAVID MOVED HIS FAMILY.
BUT, IT WASN'T LONG THAT THE SAINTS WERE FORCED TO MOVE ON. DAVID AND HIS FAMILY
MOVED OUT OF NAUVOO IN THE WINTER OF 1846, BUT IT WAS NEARLY 6 YEARS BEFORE THEY
FINALLY WERE ABLE TO GET FITTED OUT, FOR TO CARRY THEM OVER THE LONG LAST LEG
OF THEIR JOURNEY FROM IOWA TO UTAH.
THE TRIP FROM IOWA TO UTAH WAS A HARD ONE. CYNTHIA WAS IN POOR HEALTH AND EXPECTING
A NEW BABY.
ON 15 JUNE 1852, THEY MOVED THEIR FAMILY WESTWARD TO SALT LAKE CITY. AFTER TRAVELLING
250 MILES, THEY GAVE BIRTH TO THEIR 11TH CHILD, WHO WAS STILLBORN. AND THEN JUST
TWO WEEKS AFTER THIS BIRTH, ON 02 JULY 1852, SHE DIED. CYNTHIA AND THE BABY,
WERE BOTH LAID TO REST ON THE MIDWESTERN PRAIRIE SOMEWHERE NEAR THE PLATTE RIVER.
LACKING THE PLANKS FOR A COFFIN, CYNTHIA WAS LAID TO REST WRAPPED IN A QUILT
AND COVERED WITH A LAYER OF TREE BRANCHES. THE GRAVE WAS DUG DEEP BECAUSE CYNTHIA
HAD A FEAR OF WOLVES. THE REMAINDER OF THEIR JOURNEY WAS UNEVENTFUL.
THEY ARRIVED IN SALT LAKE CITY, ON 09 SEPTEMBER 1852. THEY MADE THE TRIP IN
COVERED WAGONS ACROSS THE PLAINS. THEY HAD BEEN ON THE TRAIL FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS.
THEY WENT TO BOUNTIFUL TO VISIT SOME FRIENDS OF DAVID'S, WHILE THERE HIS DAUGHTER--
CYNTHIA, CONTRACTED WHOOPING COUGH AND DIED.
THE FAMILY MOVED TO EAST WEBER AND EVENTUALLY, DAVID MARRIED A MRS. OAKS, WHO
HAD A GROWN DAUGHTER. THE DAUGHTER WAS UNKIND TO DAVID'S CHILDREN AND CAUSED
HER MOTHER TO TREAT THE KIDS CRUELLY. MRS. OAKS WOULD MAKE THE KIDS GO OUT INTO
THE COLD WINTER WEATHER EVERY MORNING WHILE SHE SCRUBBED THE FLOOR; SOMETIMES
A KIND NEIGHBOR WOULD TAKE PITY ON THE KIDS AND INVITE THEM IN OUT OF THE COLD,
FOR WHICH THEY WERE GRATEFUL. FINALLY, DAVID AND THIS MRS. OAKS PARTED. LATER,
DAVID MARRIED LENA LARSEN, WHO WAS A WIDOW OF A DRUNKARD. SHE WAS UNACCUSTOMED
TO CHILDREN, AND BEING THE YOUNGEST (HARRIET JANE) WAS TREATED VERY CRUELLY AT
TIMES.
THE FAMILY ENDURED MANY HARDSHIPS WHILE LIVING IN EAST WEBER. THE GRASSHOPPERS
TOOK THE CROPS AND NOTHING IN THE LINE OF FOOD WAS RAISED. EVERYONE WAS OUT OF
BREAD STUFF LONG BEFORE ANOTHER HARVEST WAS GATHERED. EVERYONE WAS OUT OF FLOUR.
THE CHILDREN USED TO TAKE SACKS AND FILL THEM WITH SEGO LILY BULBS AND WILD ONIONS
AND ANY OTHER PLANT THAT COULD BE USED FOR FOOD. THESE THINGS TOOK THE PLACE
OF BREAD, BUT FAR FROM SATISFACTORY. THOSE WHO HAD BRAN SIFTED IT AND MADE BREAD;
THEY FELT THEMSELVES VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY SUCH A TREAT. WHEN THE
GRASSHOPPERS CAME, THEY CAME LIKE BIG BLACK CLOUDS IN THE AIR AND FELL UPON THE
PLANTS AND VINES. EVERYTHING WAS BEAT TO THE GROUND AND THE FIELDS WERE LEFT
A BARREN WASTE. MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN TRIED TO FIGHT THEM, BUT TO NO AVAIL
AND THE CROPS WERE DESTROYED.
ANOTHER TRIAL CAME, WHEN JOHNSON'S ARMY WAS SENT TO UTAH. ABLE BODIED MEN AND
BOYS OVER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS OF AGE WERE REQUIRED TO ACT AS SOLDIERS TO KEEP
THE ARMY FROM ENTERING THE VALLEY. ONE OF DAVID'S SONS WERE SENT, AS WERE MANY
OF HIS RELATIVES. IN THE SPRING, PRESIDENT BRIGHAM YOUNG MADE A TREATY WITH JOHNSON'S
ARMY, IN WHICH THEY PROMISED THAT IF THEY WOULD BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE CITY
THEY WOULD NOT HARM PEOPLE OR PROPERTY. APPARENTLY, BRIGHAM YOUNG DIDN'T HAVE
MUCH FAITH IN THE PROMISES OF THE ARMY DUE TO PAST EXPERIENCES, WHEREIN THE SAINTS
HAD BEEN TREATED VERY BADLY BY THE GOVERNMENT; SO HE CALLED THE SAINTS TOGETHER
AND INSTRUCTED THEM TO MOVE SOUTH TO A CAMP UNTIL THE DANGER WAS OVER.
SO, WHEN DAVID'S FAMILY LEFT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHERE THEY WERE GOING. MEN WERE
LEFT BEHIND AND INSTRUCTED TO SET FIRE TOEVERYHTHING, HOMES AND ALL, IF THE PROMISES
OF THE ARMY WERE NOT KEPT. PRESIDENT YOUNG SAID THAT THIS TIME THEY WERE NOT
GOING TO ENJOY OUR HOMES THAT WE HAD STRUGGLED SO HARD TO GET. THE ARMY PASSED
THROUGH AND ACTED ALL RIGHT. IN THE FALL EVERYONE WAS TOLD TO GO BACK TO THEIR
HOMES. AFTER THEY STARTED TO MOVE IT BEGAN TO RAIN.
DAVID'S FAMILY WENT TO BOUNTIFUL THE FIRST DAY AND STAYED WITH SOME FRIENDS,
BY THE NAME OF BERGESS.
THE NEXT MOVE WAS TO HYRUM, CACHE CO., UTAH. THE FAMILY DROVE ONE OF THE FIRST
WAGONS THERE. THEY PUT IN CROPS AND MADE WATER DITCHES. THEY MOVED WITH 9 OTHER
MEN. IN THE FALL, THEY LAID OUT THE TOWN AND BUILT HOUSES. THE HOUSES WERE ALL
JOINED TOGETHER IN A FORT. THIS WAS A PROTECTION AGAINST THE INDIANS. THE MEN
THEN WENT AND GOT THEIR WIVES. ONE NIGHT AT DARK A BAND OF INDIANS CAME, ALL
THE MEN WERE EIGHT MILES AWAY WORKING ON THE DITCHES. ONLY ONE OLD MAN, WHO WAS
NAMED BENSON WAS LEFT. THE INDIANS WENT TO HIM AND TOLD HIM THEY WANTED FOOD;
SO WE GAVE THEM ALL WE COULD SPARE AFTER WHICH THEY WENT AWAY. SOME OF THE WOMEN
WERE SO FREIGHTENED THEY STAYED UP ALL NIGHT WATCHING FOR THE INDIANS TO COME
BACK. ONE WOMAN LEFT HER FAMILY AND RAN OFF FOR MILES AND FINALLY HID IN SOME
BUSHES. HER BROTHER WENT AND FOUND HER THE NEXT DAY AND BROUGHT HER HOME.

HER TO JOIN HIS FAITH.

AND THEY STAYED THERE UNTIL THE FALL, IN SEPTEMBER THEY MOVED TO BEAR LAKE COUNTY, IDAHO TO HELP SETTLE WHAT IS NOW MONTPELIER, IDAHO. THAT WAS IN THE FALL OF 1864. IN THAT SAME FALL, THEIR FIRST CHILD, A BOY, WAS BORN, THE FIRST MALE CHILD BORN IN BEAR LAKE CO. HERE THEY BOUGHT LAND FROM LORD FAIRFAX, A GOOD FRIEND TO GEORGE WASHINGTON.
THEY BUILT CABINS ALONG THE LOST RIVER. BUT, WHEN IT GOT TO CROWDED ALONG THE
RIVER, JOHN OSBORN AND WIFE, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHERS, HEAR OF NEW LAND AVAILABLE
IN GREENBIER COUNTY. THEY MOVED THERE SETTLING ON THE MUDDY RIVER AND MUDDY CREEK
MOUNTAIN, NEAR THE NEWLY LAID OUT TOWN OF ALDERSON.
THIS MOVE TO THE MUDDY RIVER AND MUDDY CREEK MOUNTAIN AREA WAS DURING THE TIME
OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. THE OSBORNS AND RELATIVES DIDN'T SEND ANYONE TO HELP
GENERAL WASHINGSTON'S ARMY. THEY APPARENTLY WERE TOO BUSY FIGHTING THE BRITISH
ALREADY, IN THE FORM OF MURDEROUS INDIANS ON THE WESTERN FRONTIER. THE INDIANS
COULD COLLECT A BOUNTY OF $50.00 FOR ANY COLONIST SCALP THEY COULD BRING TO THE
BRITISH GARRISON AT DETROIT. WHILE THERE IS NO PARTICULAR RECORD OF INDIAN RAIDS
UP THE MUDDY CREEK VALLEY, THERE WERE SEVERAL ATTACKS ON FORT SAVANNAH (NOW LEWISBURG)
NEARBY.
WHEN THE BRITISH FINALLY LEFT OUR SHORES, AND THE INDIANS RETREATED TO THE
FAR SIDE OF THE OHIO, OUR PEOPLE SETTLED DOWN TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR GOALS IN THAT
