WHEN HER FIRST BABY WAS TWO WEEKS OLD, THE UNITED STATES ARMIES WERE EXPECTED TO WIPE THIS PEOPLE (MORMONS) OFF THE EARTH AND THE PEOPLE WERE TOLD BY CHURCH LEADERS TO MOVE SOUTH TO UTAH COUNTY. SHE WAS TOO ILL TO TRAVEL SO WAS LEFT BEHIND WITH ONE OR TWO OTHER WOMEN WHO WERE ALSO TOO ILL. ONLY ONE MAN, THE SHERIFF, WAS LEFT TO GUARD THE TOWN. AFTER A WEEK OR SO, HER HUSBAND, SAMUEL RETURNED , BEING SO WORRIED ABOUT HER, AND MOVED HER SOUTH ON HER BED.
SHE WITNESSED THE TIME WHEN IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO RAISE ENOUGH BREAD STUFF TO SUBSIST ON, DURING THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET FAMINE OF 7 YEARS. THEY WOULD GO T THE HILL SIDES AND FARM LANDS AND HUNT ROOTS OF VARIOUS PLANTS WHICH THEY USED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF CEREALS AND GRAINS. WILD MINT FROM WILLOW PATCHES FOR TEA AND DRIED CARROTS GROUND FOR COFFEE OR A BURNT CRUST OF BREAD IF ANY WERE TO BE HAD. ALL THESE THINGS WENT TO MAKE PEOPLE VERY INDEPENDENT AND LEARN TO KEEP THEMSELVES WITHOUT MONEY.
SHE WAS THE FIRST MILLINER BRIGHAM CITY HAD FOR MANY YEARS. SHE AND HER CHILDREN WOULD ALSO FOLLOW THE THRESHING MACHINES AND GET THE CONSENT OF THE FARMERS TO LET THEM TAKE THE BUNDLES OF GRAIN AND CUT THE HEADS OFF INTO A SHEET AND THEN WOULD CARRY THE STRAW HOME WHERE SHE WOULD MAKE IT INTO BRAID FOR HATS. SHE MADE ALL SORTS OF HATS FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND PEOPLE WOULD COME FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY TO BUY HER HATS.
