HE CAME TO MISSOULA BEFORE THE RAILROAD. THE TRIP FROM GREEN RIVER (NEAR THE PRESENT MANDAN, NORTH DAKOTA) WAS BY FREIGHT AND STAGE TEAMS. "WE WERE NATURALLY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR HOSTILE INDIANS ON THE TRIP," HE RECALLED. AND NATURALLY HEARD MANY STORIES, SOME THE TRUTH AND SOME OF COURSE, JUST EXAGGERATIONS. HOWEVER, IT REMAINED FOR THAT TRIP TO GIVE ME THE WORST SCARE I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. ON THE STAGE TRIP FROM DEER LODGE TO THE NEXT STAGE STOP, IT BECAME NECESSARY FOR SOMEONE TO DRIVE THE OUTFIT--- BECAUSE THE DRIVER WAS "DEAD DRUNK". I TOOK THE LINES TO GO OVER A TRAIL I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE AND THE HORSES WERE FORCED AT TOP SPEED. WE WERE COMING DOWN A HILL AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP, OR EVEN CHECK THE TEAM, BUT SOMEHOW I MANAGED --- WITH THE HELP OF THE INTELLIGENT HORSES-- TO MAKE THE NECESSARY CURVES AND GET DOWN THAT HILL IN SAFETY".
WILLIAM SAID THERE WAS BUT LITTLE IN MISSOULA WHEN HE CAME HERE -- JUST A SPRINKLING OF HOUSES AND SOME FARMS ALONG THE RIVER. WITH HIS BEDROLL OVER HIS BACK AND CARRYING A SATCHEL HE SET OUT FOR A JOB AT LOLO. THERE HE GOT WORK FROM J. P. (JERRY) McCLAIN. "I WORKED FOR A DOLLAR A DAY AND BOARDED MYSELF AND MADE MONEY". WILLIAM AFTER A YEAR BOUGHT MR. McCLAIN'S INTERESTS IN 800 ACRES OF LAND AND STARTED FARMING. HE RAISED WHEAT, OATS AND BARLEY. THAT WAS BEFORE THE BUILDING OF THE RAILROAD AND HE RECALLS HE GOT MORE FOR THE GRAIN THEN THAN HE EVER DID AFTER THAT IN HIS YEARS OF FARMING. THE WHEAT BROUGHT HIM $2.25 A HUNDRED, WHILE THE OATS AND BARLEY YIELDED HIM $1.75 A HUNDRED.
WILLIAM HAD BEEN HERE A YEAR OR TWO WHEN JOINED BY HIS BROTHER SAM MACLAY. DAVE MACLAY FOLLOWED SAM HERE FROM THE EAST ABOUT TWO YEARS LATER.
WILLIAM FARMED AT LOLO UNTIL 1884 WHEN HE SOLD OUT AND WENT TO THE BIG FLAT COUNTRY, WEST OF HERE, AND FARMED THERE UNTIL 1892 WHEN HE SOLD OUT AND MOVED A FEW MILES AWAY TO O'BRIEN CREEK. IN 1910 HE MOVED TO THE CITY FROM THE RANCH AND THEN BACK TO THE FARM ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. HOWEVER, LAST MONTH HE MOVED TO THE NEW HOME ON SOUTH AVENUE.
