THE WINDSOR CASTLE HAS A STRUCTURAL HISTORY COVERING SOME EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS AND IS UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX CASTLES IN THE BRITISH ISLES. THE CASTLE HAS BEEN REBUILT, REFURBISHED AND ADDED ON TO ON MANY OCCASIONS. FORTUNATELY, THE HISTORY AND STRUCTURE OF THE CASTLE'S CENTRAL FEATURE, THE GREAT ROUND TOWER ON THE MOTTE, ARE FAIRLY CLEAR. THE CASTLE WAS BUILT IN 1067 BY WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR AND IS A MOTTE AND BAILEY TYPE. ON THE MOTTE WILLIAM BUILT A STONE SHELL KEEP SOME HUNDRED AND TWENTY FEET IN DIAMETER WITH WALLS TEN FEET THICK. THE CASTLE WA COMPLETED IN 1075 AND REMAINED IN USE UNTIL THE REIGN OF HENRY THE SECOND (1154 TO 1189), WHO REBUILT THE CASTLE ON MORE IMPOSING LINES. THE NEXT MAJOR WORK ON THE CASTLE WAS UNDERTAKEN BY HENRY THE THIRD (1216 TO 1272) AND IT WASN'T UNTIL HIS GREAT GRANDSON, EDWARD THE THIRD (1327 TO 1377) , DID FURTHER RECONSTRUCTION ON THE CASTLE. FROM THEIR SUGAR CANE THEY MADE THEIR SORGHUM, MOLASSES AND SUGAR. THERE WAS QUITE A SOCIAL GATHERING WHEN THE SUGAR WAS NEARLY FINISHED, NEIGHBORS CAME TO TEST AND TASTE.
AFTER THE MORMON MISSIONARIES CAME AND PAID THEM A VISIT, THEY WERE ALL CONVERTED AND BAPTIZED. AS THERE WERE NO LDS PEOPLE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD, THEY FELT LIKE THEY SHOULD GO WHERE THE CHURCH WAS. SO THEY DECIDED TO COME TO CANADA. THEY ARRIVED IN CANADA IN SEPTEMBER 1902. Parents: ELAM ZADOC LEE and ANNA DILL (?).
